IKEA Hack: UNG Drill Frame
Carli & I LOVE IKEA (Like 99% of the world). We’re still in the “poor college student” phase of our lives, so we need furniture that is trendy and cheap. IKEA meets all of our needs. Not to mention the food. THE FOOD. If you haven’t eaten at the IKEA bistro, may we suggest the pizza, the ice cream, and the cinnamon roll. Yes, I said AND, not OR. You need to try all three!
So IKEA tends to stick to simple, modern pieces. Sometimes the furniture fits nicely into our decor (like the EXPEDIT Shelving Unit. We have three in our apartment), but sometimes they need a bit of life put in them.
I bought the UNG DRILL Frame for only $24.99. I already have the UNG DRILL Mirror hanging over my bed. It’s the center of my room and follows the simple, black and white style I have going on. Since the frame looks so similar to the mirror I decided it needed a touch of glitz.
I spray painted it metallic gold. I couldn’t find gold spray paint specifically made for plastic, so I took a gamble and used the regular Krylon gold metallic spray paint. I used a primer under it, in hopes it would keep the paint on. The metallic layer has a “crackly” appearance to it in some places, but I’m hoping the paint stays on regardless (fingers crossed!)
I used a black and white stripe wallpaper sample I had laying around, for the backdrop of my pictures. Then I had some Instagram photos printed using the PostalPix App.
And, Wah-la! There it is! Definitely better than a plain, white frame 🙂
Hi Britta, I love it. I know krylon sells a paint to use on plastic, but not sure you would have found that awesome gold. I think because you used primer it should be fine. I just love diy!! I am going to try making mercury glass candle holders.
Thanks Candy! I agree, it’s so much fun! I’ve seen those on Pinterest, they look great!
