Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, we heard lots of buzz about Fonuts. A magical, donut heaven where the donuts baked and/or steamed and never fried. We were intrigued. We had to make a visit.
We made our first trip later in the day so the donut case was pretty empty. I remember getting the Strawberry Buttermilk variety which is a flavor I never gravitate towards, but oh my am I glad I got it. The donuts, specifically the Strawberry Buttermilk, taste like moist, delicate cake. Like no other donut I’ve ever tasted. The glaze on top is pretty standard but I love that it’s not overly sweet.
On this trip back to Fonuts, I was dying to try more flavors. Britta and I were able to pick up 4 different varieties: Red Velvet, Chocolate Hazelnut (gluten free), Blueberry Earl Grey and yet again, Strawberry Buttermilk. The Chocolate Hazelnut was a bit of a disappointment due to the dry texture and lack of flavor. The Red Velvet also wasn’t amazing but it was bad either, just not my favorite. The Blueberry was one of the best donuts I’ve ever had (it was the favorite with everyone in our household). It had the same light, cake-like texture as the Strawberry Buttermilk but with more flavor. The blueberries almost added a bit of tartness which I really enjoyed. And I could not taste any Earl Grey flavor which was a pleasant surprise because I’m not a fan.
If you’re looking for a unique donut in Los Angeles, you must make a stop into Fonuts. They have multiple gluten-free and vegan options, the donuts are a good value and they are absolutely delicious. I can’t wait to go back and hopefully try the Cinnamon Sugar and Banana Cinnamon.
Bonus: some flavors also come in minis! While we were here, one of the kind employees was generous enough to give us a mini chocolate and it was almost too cute to eat. Almost.
