Sweet Eats: Erin McKenna’s Bakery

We recently moved to Hollywood, nearby Larchmont Blvd. We’ve heard about all the amazing eateries on this street from our favorite bloggers Cupcakes & Cashmere and Studio DIY. So we were super excited to try out some new spots.

Since we started this Sweet Eats series we’ve kind of stuck to what we know. Milk Jar makes our favorite cookies and Cake Monkey bakery seemed right up our alley. So for this installment we went out on a limb and decided to go to a vegan AND gluten free bakery called Erin Mckenna’s Bakery. We trust Yelp completely so when we saw the reviews for this place, we knew we had to try it.

We’ve tried a good amount of vegan desserts and we actually prefer them most of the time, due to the increased density. If you’ve had the vegan red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles then you know what I’m talking about. That cupcake is made with coconut oil so it’s super chewy and dense. YUM! Ok, now back to Erin Mckenna’s.

Erin Mckenna’s opened in New York City back in 2005 with the underserved in mind. Erin wanted to open a bakery that everyone could enjoy. Even if you have a sensitivity to gluten, dairy, egg, and soy! We love that she set out to cater to everyone, because it would seriously suck to not be able to eat a cupcake as a child because of an intolerance you’re born with. Read more about the bakery here!

So we arrived at the bakery on a Sunday morning. We knew it would be busy, as most bakeries are on the weekends. But we had no idea HOW busy this place gets. Larchmont is a popular hangout among Angelinos as I stated earlier, so we shouldn’t have been so surprised. Still the service was great, just a little bit chaotic. So be prepared to wait.

The bakey itself looks like something straight out of You’ve Got Mail. Total New York City vibe! There are a few retro chairs out front, which is nice. We weren’t expecting seating options. There were paper decorations hanging from the ceiling and even a napkin wall where people leave little notes. The boxes are bright pink, which is right up our alley. Erin Mckenna’s seems like a very relaxing spot when they aren’t so busy.

We ordered a few items including the Chocolate Cupcake, Carrot Cake Cupcake, Samoa Donut, Powdered Sugar Blueberry Donut, Donut, Chocolate Chip Cookie, and a Princess Brownie.

First of all I’m just going to recommend that you avoid the cookies and the brownies all together. the cream cheese frosting on the brownie was made of oil and it almost immediately melted off. The brownie was chocolaty but the texture was a little too dry for my liking. Carli and I are super picky about cookies and we couldn’t even finish this one. However, the cupcakes and the donuts are both solid choices if you are vegan or gluten free. The donuts all have a lemon undertone so be prepared for that. The texture if very cake like and moist. The cupcakes were good and you couldn’t really tell that they didn’t contain dairy!

While Erin McKenna’s wasn’t our favorite bakery, we wanted to include it because we know there are so many vegan/gluten free people in Los Angeles and they need sweets too!

What’s your favorite vegan bakery?
