Easy Cake Donuts | Valentine’s Edition

Easy Cake Donuts | Twinspiration

We’re here with a last-minute valentines day recipe that is sure to please your SO or your friends! To be honest – we’ve been trying to make donuts for the blog FOREVER. We thought Valentine’s Day was the perfect excuse to cross this off our to-do list. You know us, we don’t like complicated recipes. We want to make our desserts fast and eat them even faster (<– our lives summed up in one sentence).

Fried donut recipes seemed daunting so we turned to this cake mix donut recipe we found awhile back. We tweaked it to make it our own are we’re extremely happy with how these turned out!! We used red velvet for the base to make it perfect for Valentine’s day but obviously, you can use your favorite cake mix. We also love how our pink glaze came out, it looks so bright against the dark cake.

Now, let’s get into the recipe…

Ingredients:

  • One box dry cake mix (we used red velvet)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Donut pan
  • Sprinkles
  • Donut cutter

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Grease your donut pan

Mix together cake mix, egg, oil & water in a large bowl

Fill a plastic bag with batter, cut off one of the corners and fill each well about half way full with donut batter

Bake for 12-14 minutes

Let donuts cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. Remove & finish cooling on a drying rack

Optional: Place in refrigerator to cool some more for approx. 10 minutes (this really helped our donuts come out of the pan easier)

Optional: We overfilled some of our wells (easy to do) so the donut holes weren’t so perfect. To fix this, we used this donut cutter we had and just re-cut the holes. It worked perfectly!

Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Melt butter

Whisk in powdered sugar and milk – you can always add more milk if you want your glaze to be thinner

Dip the donut halfway into the glaze, then turn the donut sideways to allow extra glaze to run off

Add sprinkles immediately and let it firm up on a cooling rack

After a few hours, the glaze gets firm enough to stack donuts on a plate without smooshing
