DIY Dreamcatcher

DIY Dreamcatcher by Twinspiration

Carli and I have always had a thing for dream catchers, and all things Native American related. Ever since we saw ‘How the West Was Fun’, a Mary-Kate and Ashley classic, we decided that Native Americans were the coolest humans around. Later on in life we actually found out that we were part Cree, a Canadian tribe. We were pretty ecstatic to hear this news.

Anyways, I had seen some dreamcatchers on Etsy for sale that were absolutely gorgeous, but also pretty pricy. I love to craft and I thought this would be a great new challenge. So after gathering ideas from Pinterest, this is what I came up with.

Supplies:

  • 1 metal craft ring- I would suggest an 8 or 9 inch ring for a larger dreamcatcher, but any size would work
  • 1 lace doily- make sure the doily is 1 inch smaller than your ring
  • Thread-I used a few different colors but you can use one if you’d like
  • Ribbon for the rings
  • Yarn, feathers, ribbon, beads, and any other embellishments you would like to use for the strands

Directions:

1) Wrap your choice of ribbon around the ring. Hot glue an end down and wrap as much as you want, and then glue the other end down. Make sure to pull really tight so that the ribbon is wrapped snug around the ring. I used three different ribbons, but you could use one to make it easier.

2) Lay your doily inside the craft ring. Attach a piece of the doily to the ring with the thread, by tying a knot. I used a doily with points so I just tied a knot at every point. If yours is circular just tie a knot every few inches. Make sure the spacing is even. Repeat until the doily is secure in the center of the ring

3) Cut pieces of ribbon and yarn and tie strands to the bottom of your dreamcatcher. This is the fun part that allows you to be creative. I also used metal wiring and beads, and glued some feathers to my ribbon.

4) Attach a small piece of ribbon at the top, and make a loop to hang.

Note: Factory Direct Craft has a section full of inexpensive dreamcatcher supplies! I would suggest buying most of your supplies from them. I was able to find some colored doilies in the dollar spot at Michaels, where I also bought my yarn and ribbon. Michael’s is usually my go-to for craft supplies!
